National Lifeguard (NL)

Description:
The 40 hours NL course is for lifesavers qualified with the bronze cross and Standard First Aid-CPR –C awards,   and it covers the necessary skills for becoming a lifeguard.   This certification is the standard measurement of lifeguard performance in Canada.  This course is designed to develop sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgement and mature, responsible attitude toward the roles of the lifeguard.   The program emphasizes teamwork, leadership, communications, and the prevention of accidents and the treatment of medical emergencies.  Candidates are also required to purchase a FOX-40 whistle and bring it with them the first day of the course.

Prerequisites:
Minimum age 16 years by last day of course, Bronze Cross and current Standard First Aid certificate dated no more than two years from the certification date and certified by the Ontario Public Pools Regulation (565/90).  The accepted agencies for SFA are the Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross, St. John's Ambulance and Canadian Ski Patrol.

Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Aid (CPR-B)

Description:
The Bronze Medallion course prepares the candidates for basic water rescues and develops their physical fitness, decision making and judgement skills in preparation for low to high risk rescues.  Lifesavers at this stage must demonstrate stroke efficiency and endurance.   Candidates must be able to complete 500 metres of swim in maximum time of 15 minutes during the course.  The Emergency first aid or EFA focuses on the general knowledge of first aid principles and the emergency treatment of injuries.   The CPR-B portion of this course focuses on rescue breathing, adult, child and infant CPR and obstructed airway response and the purpose of an AED machine.   Identification and treatment of respiratory and circulatory emergencies and victim assessments are the skills included in the course.

Prerequisites:
Bronze star or minimum age of 13.   The bronze medallion with EFA and CPR-B are the prerequisites for all other lifesaving/lifeguarding awards.

Bronze Cross

Description:
The Bronze Cross course is designed for candidates that are willing to develop their understanding of decision making, judgement, fitness and lifesaving skills.  The course will prepare candidates for a more challenging and advanced training, including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities.  Candidates must be able to complete 600 metres swim in an 18 minute time frame.

Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard

This course is a pre-requisite course to the professional lifeguard certification that teaches knowledge and practice of first aid, rescue skills, lifeguarding skills, safe behaviours, and how to be part of an elite team. This ensures youth are trained in prevention of injuries, not just in how to respond to them.

Course Length
Classroom and Pool – 25 hours of teaching time
Observation – 2 hours
Final scenarios – 3-5 hours

Pre-Course Requirements
12 years of age and ability to swim to the Red Cross Swim Kids
level 10 or equivalent or higher.

Red Cross Lifeguard Course

The Pool Lifeguard Course offers professional lifeguard certification for pools and builds confident lifeguards to create safe, supervised aquatic areas. The course prepares lifeguards to prevent and respond to lifeguard emergencies, create a safe environment, work in teams,and handle public relations in a professional manner. The candidates are continuously evaluated throughout the course based on standard evaluation criteria and complete final skills and knowledge assessments.
